2007/Career Statistics & Game Log

Bio: acquired in a trade with the Reds for starter Bronson Arroyo. At the time of the trade the Sox had too much starting pitching, which is why the deal was made. Arroyo went on to have a great year with the Reds, and Boston ended up in dire need for starting pitching. Pena on the other hand was hurt for a period of time. His first season wasn't bad in the end. He won't get his chance to start this season, and probably not again for 2008 either. He will remain the team's fourth outfielder, though Francona intends to get him 400 at bats, and I believe that is possible. Obviously Pena has to stay healthy to approach that many at bats as a non starter.
Projected 2007 Statistics: .295, 15, 65, 45, 30
Fantasy Outlook: no surprises here, the only way he'll have strong fantasy impact is if one of our starting outfielders goes down. If he does move into a starting role, he'll have pretty good fantasy value and I'd be content with him as one of my starters. If he gets close to 400 at bats as speculated, he may even be worth a bench spot as your fantasy backup outfielders. How often is a backup outfielder the backup outfielder on a fantasy team? Only when the player can be as good as Pena. Pena is impatient but has superb power and if you take him, make sure you get him in when he's set to start. He should be able to hit 15-20 homers.
